Changes to How SDA Funding Appears in NDIS Plans

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has introduced an important update to how Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding appears in participants’ NDIS plans.

From 19 October 2026, eligible participants will have their full approved SDA funding amount included in their NDIS plan when it is approved, whether they are already living in SDA or still looking for suitable accommodation.

This change aims to simplify funding arrangements, reduce delays and improve access to approved SDA funding.

What Has Changed?

Previously, some eligible participants had only a $1 placeholder or a partial SDA funding amount included in their plans.

Under the new arrangements:

Full SDA Funding: The full approved SDA funding amount will appear in newly approved plans.
Easier Access: Eligible participants searching for SDA accommodation will have their approved funding reflected in their plans.
Reduced Delays: The update aims to simplify administration and funding access.
No Eligibility Changes: SDA eligibility requirements and approved funding entitlements remain unchanged.

Do NDIS Participants Need to Take Action?

Most participants do not need to take immediate action.

Participants whose current plans show a $1 placeholder or partial SDA funding will generally receive an update at their next plan reassessment.

However, participants moving into SDA accommodation may be able to request an earlier update through a change of circumstances.

Important: Participants must notify the NDIA when they move into a new SDA home.

What Does This Mean for SDA Providers?

Importantly, there are no changes to how SDA providers claim funding.
