Can NDIS Funding Be Used for Respite Care?

Caring for a loved one with a disability can be rewarding, but everyone needs a break sometimes. The good news is that the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) may provide funding for respite-related supports, helping participants receive appropriate care while their family members or regular carers take a break.
At 7 Days Care, we understand how important reliable and compassionate disability support is for participants and their families.
What Is NDIS Respite Care?
NDIS respite care provides temporary disability-related support when a participant’s usual family member or informal carer needs a break.
Respite support can help participants maintain their daily routines, receive personal care and develop greater independence while allowing regular carers time to rest and recharge.

Can NDIS Funding Cover Respite Care?
Yes! Eligible NDIS participants may be able to access respite-related support through their NDIS plan.
Short-Term Accommodation (STA) may provide funding for up to 28 days per year, generally for a maximum of 14 days at a time, depending on the participant’s individual needs and funding.
However, respite funding is not automatic. The support must meet NDIS funding requirements and relate to the participant’s disability support needs.
For more information, visit the official NDIS website.
What Services Can NDIS Respite Funding Cover?
Depending on individual eligibility and approved funding, respite-related support may include:
- Personal Care: Assistance with showering, dressing and daily routines.
- Daily Living Support: Help with everyday activities and maintaining independence.
- Temporary Accommodation: Suitable short-term accommodation when required.
- Support Worker Assistance: Disability-related support while regular carers take a break.
- Community Participation: Assistance with suitable community activities.
NDIS respite funding does not cover ordinary holidays or unrelated travel expenses.
